Warner Avenue Elementary School
Los Angeles Unified School District
My last year (of seven) at Warner, and my last year in public schools until college. Mrs. Stebbins and Mrs. Luchsinger taught as a team in two linked classrooms that mixed fifth and sixth graders. It was exemplary of the kind of experimentation that was going on in the LAUSD at the time, playing with things that in the end proved helpful to no-one.
One of the reasons I wound up at The Harvard School instead of following my sisters into Emerson Junior High School and University High School was just this kind of social engineering. My parents, for all of their liberal leanings, had no intention of making their kids guinea pigs, sacrificing our education on the altar of some educator’s brain fart.
