When I was a sophomore at UCSD, I spent 3 months working in the offices of California State Assemblywoman Sunny Mojonnier (R-Encinitas). It was a superb introduction to the legislative process, and to what legislators can and cannot do.
I also got to go to the 1984 California Republican Convention in Santa Clara, attending the sessions on behalf of Ms. Mojonnier. I attended a lot of the sessions, but I am left with the lasting impression that I could have somehow done more.
Had I stayed at UCSD I could have stayed on with them, and probably have developed into a legislative assistant. But I was off to Davis on transfer, and I’d spent enough time involved in the process to realize that this was not what I wanted to do with my life, and that international relations was more my speed.
