Stopped for a moment in the frigid reaches of northern Montana. Look carefully. See the Chinese restaurant?
Yep. Even here in Shelby. Brilliant.
Side note: I hear this one has now closed. But don’t fret: Kowloon Restaurant on Main Street in Shelby is open every day but Monday.
The West Glacier stop, formerly the Belton Station on the old Great Northern Line. She’s a beauty in the snow.
First fresh air stop of the day. Early. Brisk. But undeniably beautiful.
Was it a box dinner? Yes – we didn’t pick up our dining car until we hooked up with the #8 in Spokane at midnight.
Was it awful? NO! It was phenomenal!
Another score for Amtrak!
Inside of Portland’s old-school railway beauty. The Amtrak service here is unbelievably good.
They gave these to me for free. Portland station for the win again.
Amtrak kicks ass on any domestic US airline, and this is but one more example of why.
Pasco, Washington – last stop before bedtime.
Elk burger. With avocado. Almost no fat in the meat, but tons of flavor.
Thank you, Deschutes brewery, for an amazing dinner in Portland.
I have been given permission to have a beer. A small beer.
I wind up drinking about 2/3.
And felt fat.
Drinking my lunch: a cup of fresh brewed drip coffee at Stumptown Roasters and a protein shake.
The protein-caffeine mix is my substitute for carbs.
