Train treats

Things I love about Amtrak: the box of healthy train treats handed out in Business Class on the Pacific Surfliner.

I brought food of my own (a habit I learned in China,) but these goodies are a nice supplement during the 5 hour trip.

Actor/musician Jack Black and his family were aboard as well. Very cool folks and the kids were impeccably behaved.

Adding Jazz to the Journal – Agenda Journaling

Another interesting approach to journaling is Agenda Journaling, which to me is a hybrid between bullet journaling and scrapbooking. Hope Wallace Karney teaches an e-course on how to do this (those are her illustrations above, BTW.)

For those of you who think this is a “girlie” approach to journaling, hold off. I would not consider myself a scrapbooker, but I can see myself moving more in this direction in a couple of years when I shift a lifestyle that is somewhat less timesheet-driven (hint – see the countdown calendar on the sidebar of this blog.) I still catch ephemeris in my bullet journal, but not quite to this extent.

Inspiring. It helps makes the journals a lot more fun than just lists of actions and activities.

Today’s Virtual Perch: Ashland, Virginia

Out my virtual window today as I work: the Amtrak station at Ashland, VA, perched alongside the twin-tracked east-coast mainline between Washington, D.C., and Richmond.

There is always a healthy blend of Amtrak long-distance and commuter trains, mixed with a regular cadence of CSX freight trains. The scene is peppered by a local cast of characters staying at the Henry Clay Inn behind the station, munching croissant sandwiches at Homemade by Suzanne, or grabbing caffeinated sustenance at Ashland Coffee and Tea.

There is a regular parade of students from Randolph-Macon College seeking study help from the Sugar Fix bakery or the more mature fare at the Iron Horse Grill and the Caboose Market & Cafe, and one very fit retired fellow who rides a girl’s bike up and down Railroad Avenue for hours on end.

All in all, a pleasant place to work virtually. I’m looking forward to a day when I can do so in person.
